I initially had mixed feelings about Francis' new boss. The character is pretty cornball, even for Malcolm in the Middle, but goofy or oblivious characters are often a beneficial addition to a series. As a new station for the plotlines involving Francis, the ranch idea works better than Alaska but worse than military school, at least so far.

Malcolm's behavior during his first week of high school was classic. What made his experience unique compared to other similar TV teen transitions was that Malcolm was smart enough to know the reasons for his behavior, even though he couldn't affect the outcome. His friends were smart, too, which made Cynthia's response to Malcolm's outburst less unrealistic. Malcolm's desperation, which caused his idea of escaping by going to military school like Francis did, painted a startling picture of how history repeats itself in their family.
