One unusual feature of this series is that the show usually feature Doug and Carrie, and sometimes her father, and when Doug's friends are present, their role in the plot is often to advise Carrie about an issue about Doug. She frequently goes behind his back for help, seemingly because she doesn't expect Doug to listen or understand. So, although Doug's friends get involved in schemes with him in some episodes, just as often they are involved with Carrie's half of the plot.
