the one with the latent confusion
I figured the only thing that could happen after the events of last year's season finale (the mistaken proposal) was for Joey to immediately point out Rachel's misinterpretation, creating an awkward moment but probably not an awkward half hour. But what I didn't count on was the ever-available plot twist of people spontaneously walking into the room! Consequently, this episode felt like one big drawn-out moment. The scenes with the latent confusion were endearing, but I wish the writers would stop exploiting Joey for a reaction from the studio audience. Unless they bring up his "crush" again, and deal with it for real this time, they're not coming close to realism.
I wonder if Ross and Rachel's relationship problems are really what's getting the audience to tune in. Perhaps they'll make it work in the end. I hope the writers know better, because if they don't....
